Guests at Yew Trees Cottage can really relax and enjoy the tranquil environment of the Borders countryside while doing a spot of fishing in the Whiteadder River, which flows beside the cottage.  With fishing rights to the river, the cottage is the ideal location for fishing enthusiasts.  As a tributary of the Tweed, the Whiteadder is an exceptionally good river for catching salmon and trout.  The river Tweed is world famous for the quality of it’s fishing, and the river Whiteadder is no exception to the local high quality of fish available.

There is a deep hole under Preston Bridge , which dates from 1770 and was an important element in the Duns/Grantshouse/Dunbar Turnpike in the 1840’s.  More importantly large fish have been seen there.

With the spring run of salmon in February and March, the Whiteadder has improved greatly in recent years, and is now favoured by many local anglers, with night trout fishing towards the end of May.  Larger fish are apparent towards the end of the season, with the best of the fishing to be had in September, when the older slower fish enter the river.  Brown trout season starts on the 15th of March, and lasts till the 30th of September.  Salmon Fishing commences on the 1st of February and continues until the 30th of November.

For fishing advice on the river Whiteadder, water levels, maps and local angling information, contact the Berwick and District Angling Association, or use their angling diary available on their website.  Please note that it is a criminal offence to fish without a permit: Tweed Bailiffs run checks on a daily basis.
